I was sent a beautiful collection to work with called Squiggles, Dots and Lines by Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design. This is a lovely collection with blues, greens and purples. Island Batik also sent extra yardage from the collection- one light and dark that could be used in my project. This is a Fall 2023 collection and is in stores now.
I decided decided to use a standard layout for a log cabin block using 2 1/4" strips. I picked out a solid Island Batik called Fuchsia for the center blocks- it went really well with all the colors in the collection. There are 22 fabrics in this collection and I decided to use all of them except the white for this project.
My first design used both of the two light blue fabrics for the first row around the square, but I found out I didn't have enough of one fabric after starting all the blocks! After putting it aside for a night I decided to just save the partial blocks to make a row on the back because I knew I was going to have to piece the backing. Problem solved! You do have to be creative sometimes!
I made each block with one light blue fabric on the first row and the other light blue fabric on the second row which makes one half of the block all light blue. The other side of the block is a mix of the rest of the fabrics. All the fabrics look good with the fuchsia as the center block.
I used Hobbs black 80/20 cotton batting since most of the fabrics were dark. I'm liking this batting more all the time. There is no bearding of light fibers coming thru with your quilting.
A blue Aurifil thread was great for the all over quilting along with Schmetz needles. I find the Microtex needles work really well with batik fabrics and Aurifil threads.
I used the new Oliso Smart Iron that was sent in our Ambassador box. Oliso is a new sponsor this year and sent each Ambassador a new iron. I have to admit it is taking me awhile to get used to the new features on the iron, but everyone raves about it, so I'm sticking with it. I'll have more about the iron in future posts.
I decided to place the blocks so the light blue sides make diagonal rows that turn on an angle. It's fun to play around with how to arrange the blocks.
Pretty quilt. I like the Mariners compass block. 24Tangent@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt Connie and that is so neat what you did with the leftover blocks on the back! Neat collection of fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI love pinwheel blocks. They seem so happy spinning around on a quilt. Thanks for sharing your quilt.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite block right now I would have to say is the string block. I am trying to use up a lot of my "leftovers" that are in various sizes and I am making a good headway in downsizing. The quilts will then be donated to various charities. Love all the choices you made and your completed project.
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt Connie! I like the setting, it's different and very appealing. I have to say my favorite blocks is an ordinary 9 patch. They can be used in so many ways. My 2nd favorite is the log cabin, a great way to use leftover fabrics. Happy stitching!
