I LOVE log cabin blocks and was excited about this challenge. Log cabin blocks can be created and used in a wide variety of ways - the sky's the limit! The fabric collection Island Batik sent me for this challenge is called Prairie Skies designed by Kathy Engle. Look for these fabrics in your stores now. These fabrics are in lovely shades of light and dark blues and in a great variety of prints. My favorite one is the one with paw prints!
I designed this quilt and named it Blue Dahlia. This is actually the second quilt I made for this challenge. The first quilt has been accepted into the Sept/Oct 2020 issue of McCalls Quilting, so you will have to wait awhile to see it! For the second quilt for this blog I wanted to do something a little quicker and decided to do an applique design in the middle. The applique design in my quilt was inspired by a Dover illustration I found online. Dover has many illustrations that are beautiful and free!
I used a variety of log cabin blocks to frame the applique in the middle. I used Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 for the applique pieces, and tried out the new Schmetz Super Nonstick needles. It was the first time I used these needles and I did find that no fusible stuck to the needle as I sewed. I also used the Chrome Microtex needles for the rest of the sewing and the needles are wonderful. I always sew with Microtex needles and these new Chrome needles are a great addition.
Aurifil thread in blue and white worked great with all the fabrics.
I used Hobbs Heirloom 80/20 Bleached Cotton for the batting.
I used 12 of the fabrics from the collection along with white Sprinkles from the Basics Collection.
I hope you have been enjoying the stops on this Log Cabin Blog Hop. This is the last week of the hop, so be sure and go to all the blogs and see what has been created, and check out all the prize drawings that they are offering. Island Batik has had a drawing each week of precut packs of beautiful fabric, so be sure and go to the Island Batik Blog and enter there.
I have a drawing of 5 pieces of Prairie Skies. They are all a fat quarter or close to a fat quarter size. USA entries only due to shipping costs.
To enter, leave a comment and make sure that I am able to contact you if you win. I will draw a winner with Random.org on Fri 28. USA entries only due to shipping costs.
Fabrics from Island Batik, Needles from Schmetz, Thread from Aurifil and Batting from Hobbs were sent to me thru the Island Batik Ambassador program.
