Blue Moons by Connie Kauffman 40" x 40"
New York Beauties! I hope you have been enjoying the Island Batik Ambassador New York Beauty Blog Hop so far. Today is my day to post and I'm happy to show you my New York Beauty Blue Moons.
This was a great challenge. I love New York Beauty blocks. Traditionally the New York Beauty block is made with spiked quarter circles in a square or rectangular block. This block can be made in many variations and I like them all! It was hard to pick what to make - but first I had to start with the fabrics.
Island Batik sent me a Surprise bundle in the January box that I was to use in this challenge. I couldn't show you until now because the fabrics were not in the stores yet. The fabrics I received are the Snowsicle Collection by Kathy Engle.
These are a lovely soft blending of blues. They remind me of the colors of snow at dusk when everything is shimmery blues.
I love these fabrics but I was a bit stumped at first on how to use them with the New York Beauty block. Most of the New York Beauty quilts I had seen were with bright and brilliant color combinations. Many of the quilts remind me of Mexico, fireworks and fiestas. It took me a while to think more in terms of cool, moon lit nights.
Once I got in the mind set with the collection of blues I enjoyed working with them. I found one block pattern and used it for all of the blocks with some minor pattern variations. I also varied the color placement. The colors all blend so nicely it was fun to see how many different ways I could make the blocks.
I made 16 blocks with variations of inner borders and a slender triangle pieced outer border. I used 18 of the 20 fabrics in the collection. Corner buttons are an added touch.
A variety of Westalee Rulers were helpful in quilting on my domestic machine.
Two colors of
Aurifil blended wonderfully with the fabrics.
Aren't the fabrics lovely! I'm having a drawing for a variety of 22 10" squares and almost a full half yard of one of the darker prints in the Snowsicle collection.
Leave a comment below and tell me your favorite colors to work with to be entered into my drawing.
USA entries only due to postage costs. I will select a winner at the end of the blog hop.
Be sure and enter the Island Batik drawing this week for their bundles of beautiful fabrics.
Follow along each day to see what the other Ambassadors have been creating. Be sure and visit Denise Looney today to see what she made with her Snowsicle collection.
Thanks to Island Batik, Aurifil Thread, Hobbs Batting and Schmetz needles for suppling product to use in this project.
